The Catholic Diocese of Aguleri, situated in the heart of Anambra State, Nigeria, stands as a beacon of faith and service, nurturing a vibrant Catholic community since its establishment on February 12, 2023. Carved from the Archdiocese of Onitsha, this young diocese has swiftly emerged as a vital spiritual and social force, ministering to the faithful across four local government areas: Anambra West, Anambra East, Oyi, and Ayamelum. Under the pastoral leadership of its first bishop, Most Rev. Denis Chidi Isizoh, the diocese has made remarkable strides in its mission to spread the Gospel and serve its people.

As of August 1, 2025, the Diocese of Aguleri shepherds approximately 457,965 Catholics, representing about 19.3% of the total population of 1,857,060 within its 1,388 square kilometer territory. The diocese encompasses 76 parishes, each a hub of worship, community, and evangelization. These parishes are served by 120 dedicated priests, including 113 diocesan priests and 7 religious priests, who tirelessly minister to the spiritual needs of the faithful. The diocese is further enriched by the presence of 316 religious individuals, comprising 6 professed religious men and 310 religious women, whose contributions in education, healthcare, and pastoral care are invaluable.

The Diocese of Aguleri is deeply committed to fostering vocations, ensuring the future of its pastoral mission. As of 2025, it supported 59 seminarians in various stages of formation, a testament to the diocese’s vibrant faith and the promise of continued growth in priestly vocations. These seminarians are being prepared to lead and serve, carrying forward the legacy of faith that defines Aguleri’s Catholic community.

Beyond its spiritual mission, the Diocese of Aguleri is a cornerstone of social development in the region. It operates five charitable institutions, including schools, healthcare facilities, and social welfare centers, which provide essential services to both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. These institutions reflect the diocese’s holistic approach to ministry, addressing the educational, medical, and social needs of the community while promoting human dignity and compassion. The diocese’s strategic location in Aguleri, a historically significant and agriculturally rich town, enhances its ability to serve as a catalyst for community development.

Since its inception, the diocese has celebrated significant milestones, including its first priestly ordinations in 2023, presided over by Bishop Isizoh. The ordination of Rev. Menuba Damian, Rev. Okonkwo Innocent, Rev. Edozie Christopher, and Rev. Anadumaka Patrick marked a historic moment, signaling the diocese’s growing capacity to nurture its own clergy. Pastoral visits, such as Bishop Isizoh’s confirmation of 178 candidates at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Nsugbe, further underscore the diocese’s active engagement with its faithful.

The Diocese of Aguleri’s rapid growth and impact are rooted in its rich historical and cultural context. The Catholic mission in Aguleri began strategically in the late 19th century, shortly after missionaries arrived in Onitsha, spurred by the persistent invitations of Chief Onyekomeli Idigo. This early foundation laid the groundwork for a resilient Catholic presence, which continues to flourish under the diocese’s stewardship. The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Aguleri serves as the spiritual heart of the diocese, drawing worshippers and pilgrims to its sacred spaces.

Looking ahead, the Diocese of Aguleri is poised for continued growth, driven by its commitment to evangelization, education, and social outreach. Its integration into the ecclesiastical province of Onitsha as a suffragan diocese ensures strong support and collaboration, while its local initiatives reflect a dynamic response to the needs of its people. As it builds on its early achievements, the diocese remains a shining example of faith in action, transforming lives and fostering hope in Anambra State.
