Christianity kicked off in Nzam in 1934 when Fr. Francis Oboyan, a german priest was sent from the Aguleri mission to the preach to the people at Odeh, Odomagu and Nzam. He was accompanied by Mr. Sylvester Izualor. Their message was at first rejected at Nzam because they were likened to slave traders but on a second visit and with the aid of the king, they were able to preach the gospel and establish a mission school ‘St. Mary’s School Nzam’.
On August 1878, the then Archbishop of Onitsha, his eminence, Francis Cardinal Arinze responding to the indefatiable work of the then parish priest of Umuoba Anam, late Mgsr. Joseph Nwaibegbunam, created St. Mary’s parish from Our Lady of Lourdes parish, Mmiata as the first Igala speaking parish in Onitsha Archdiocese.
