St. Stephen’s Independent Station, Odomagwu

Odomagwu is among the communities that make up Olumbanasa of Igala speaking people in Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State. In the year 1934, Rev. Fr Joseph Delaney came from Aguleri Catholic mission to preach the gospel at Nzam, Odeh, Odomagwu and other communities in Olumbanasa. He was accompanied by a teacher called Mr Sylvester Izualor who was his interpreter. Rev. Fr Joseph Delaney was able to get a few converts. The pioneers were: Adinor Okafor, Anizor Ogbulie, Augustine Ochei, and Emmanuel Adigwe to mention but a few. They erected mud and tackled building which served as a church. This marked the birth of St Stephen’s Catholic Church Odomagwu.

The arrival of Rev. Fr Aloysius Maduka Agba at CKP Odeh other spiritual programmes he put in place brought many people to the Catholic Church. His spiritual programmes helped in a special way for the growth of the Catholic Church and increase in number of people. As a result of increase in population and distance trecking of the people to the Christ the King Parish Odeh, Rev. Fr Aloysius now saw the need to make Odomagwu an outstation of CKP Odeh on the first day of March 2016. He also helped to secure land with the people of Aduja Village for building of Fathers house. The people of Aduja finally gave us Land where we had already built a Father’s house.

On the 20th day of September 2023, the new bishop of Aguleri diocese Most Rev Denis Isizoh declared us independent station, with Rev. Fr Elijah Nwabunwanne as the Administrator who resumed his Pastoral duties on 14th October 2023.
