christ the king parish, Odeh

The light of the gospel came to Odeh in the year 1934, through Rev. Fr. Joseph Delaney from St. Joseph’s Catholic church, Aguleri. He was accompanied by Mr. Sylvester Izualor, a teacher of a native of Nando as an interpreter to the white man who did not understand Igala or Igbo Language.

Fr. Delaney was later assisted by other missionaries such as Rev. Fr. Sweeny, Kettle, Vincent, Brendan and Anthony Barin. Having been accepted by the Odeh community, they settled down and erected mud and thatched houses which served as their church for Sunday services and as mission school. Later, in 1936, a bigger edifice was built and was named Christ the King, Odeh.

With the rapid growth of the evangelization, Nzam was carved out as the parish for the Igala speaking  communities of the Anambra west Local Government. As an outstation of St. Mary’s Catholic church Nzam, the faithful in Odeh began to increase in numbers.

With the aid of Rev. Fr. Aloy Enemali  who made several contacts with the Archbishop, Christ the King station was made a parish with Rev. Fr. Evaristus Nwagbara as the administrator.. On 22nd September, 2013 during the maiden visit of his grace Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, Christ the King parish was elevated to the status of a parish.
