REV. FR PAUL EKWEALOR
Paul is second to the last of the
five surviving children of late Mbanugo Regina Ekwealor, the last of the three
wives of late Ekwealor Ofokansi, Umuanyamma kindred in Umuomelum quarter,
Oroma-Etiti, Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State. Born on
17th November 1961, he became a child-sitter to his senior sister
from 1972 to early 1973. There, he joined the Okonkwo Igwemma family in
attending St John’s Healing Sabbath Mission at Ani Nso, Onu Ukawu, now
relocated to Umueze Anam, near Anambra River Bridge. He was given the name Philip
as a sort of baptismal name.
Paul
returned home in January 1973 and began his primary education at Hope Rising
School, Oroma-Etiti. He was always the class monitor from then till his primary
four when his class teacher and mentor, late Sir JohnGabriel Okonkwo from
Awkuzu, took him along while attending the Priestly Ordination of Rev. Fr
Aloysius Nonso Odika, CSSp, at St Raphael’s Catholic Church Awkuzu in 1976.
There, the young Paul caught his vocation to the Priesthood. His mentor did
everything possible to ensure he entered the Seminary before he himself would
proceed to the University for his degree programme. This included promoting
Paul (and two other pupils of the three arms of primary four 1975/76) to
primary six. Thus, in September 1977, Paul entered St Paul’s Seminary, Ukpor, along
with Francis Ikechukwu Igboanugo, both of them having passed both entrance and
interview among five pupils who filled the All Hallows Seminary form for the
very first time in the history of Oroma-Etiti Anam.
He
subsequently studied Philosophy at Bigard Memorial Seminary (now St Joseph’s)
Ikot Ekpene (1983-1987), and Theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu
(1987-1991). He was ordained to the Catholic Priesthood on July 13, 1991 by
Archbishop Stephen N. Ezeanya at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Onitsha. He thus
became the first priest of Oroma-Etiti village, and the third priest of Anam.
He
spent one year as Parish Vicar at St Michael’s Parish, Fegge, Onitsha. In
September 1992, he was made the Parish Priest of St Mary’s, Nzam when the whole
of Olumbanasaa (Ega-Oja) were part of Nzam Parish. His pastoral acumen resulted
in negotiating for land with virtually all the communities making up the
Parish. He built the father’s house at Igbedor, creating Ega-Oja parish in
1997. Plans to start Father’s house in the then Inoma-Akator were nearing
completion before he left Nzam in January 1999.
On
coming to Nzam, he saw the great urgency of preparing a promising future for
the area through education. With the fatherly encouragement of Archbishop
Ezeanya, he began, jointly with Nzam community, the current Community
Comprehensive Secondary School, Nzam with its motto as ‘Hope Rising in
Tomorrow’. The then Anambra State Education Commission insisted he must become
the Principal of the school: for its fast growth. Paul thus was the Pioneer
Principal of CCSS, Nzam till about June 1999, securing SSCE Centre (WAEC and
NECO) for the school. Nzam and Olumbanasaa communities nicknamed him 2nd
Anisiobi, in recall of the pastoral acumen of the first Parish Priest of Nzam,
Fr Hillary Mary Anisiobi.
Fr
Paul left Nzam to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to study Philosophy. He
holds M.A. (Moral Philosophy) and Ph.D. (Metaphysics) from UNN; as well as
Higher Diploma in Education from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
He
joined the teaching staff of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe in
September 2005, at the instance of Archbishop Valerian Okeke. He was Head of Department
Social Studies 2016-2019; and Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences
2019-2021. He has also served the College in many other capacities. He has
risen through the ranks, attaining the highest level of Chief Lecturer/ Reader
on 1st January, 2020.
With
his personal motto as: “All Things Good to All Peoples “ from his priestly
ordination in 1991, Fr Paul mixes very well with peoples of all levels, ages,
persuasions and walks of life. At present, he is the President of some 76
priests of Bigard 1991 Set. He is the Chairman of Anambra West Elite Club;
Chairman of Anambra West Vanguard for Education and Development; among others.
Besides
Nzam, he was the Parish Priest of St Dominic’s, Abatete when CKP Ekeagu was not
yet a parish, 2005-2009. He was also Administrator of his home parish, Holy
Cross Oroma-Etiti from 1st May-October 2020. Currently, he is the
Financial Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Aguleri.
