Monsignor Cyprian Obi Ubaka hails from Umuebo-Umunya in Oyi LGA of Anambra State, and was born into the family of Late Mr. Cyril Ubaka and Mrs Anne Mgbafor Ubaka on the 7th March 1954. He had his primary school education at St Theresa’s Umunya between 1961 and 1966 after which he proceeded to the prestigious Christ the King College, Onitsha from 1967 to 1973. After his secondary school education, desiring to serve God and humanity through the priestly ministry, in 1974 he was admitted for probation at All Hallows Seminary, Onitsha.
The young Ubaka began his philosophical studies at the Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu between 1975 and 1976 and was one of the Pioneer students at Bigard Memorial Seminary Ikot Ekpene campus in 1977. He had his theological studies from 1977 to 1981. At the end of his seminary formation, he was ordained a priest on July 12th 1981 at St Theresa’s Catholic Church, Umunya.
Destined for a greater task in the church, after few years of pastoral experience, the then Archbishop S.N. Ezeanya sent him on further studies at the Pontificio Istituto de Studi Arabo et d’Islamistica, Rome from 1987 to 1989.
Between 1989 and 1990, he was at the University of Birmingham where he specialized in Islam. He joined the staff of his alma mater as a formator from 1991 to 2006.
Msgr Cy Ubaka enjoys reading, writing and walking.
He served the Church in various places and capacities where he has acquired wealth of experiences. As a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, he worked in the following places:
1. Parish Vicar at Immaculate Heart Fegge, 1981 to 1983
2. Parish Priest at St Charles Lwanga Okpoko (New Haven), 1983 to 1987
3. Pastoral Experience at St Martin de Porres Katsina, 1991
4. Lecturer at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, 1991 to 2005
5. Lecturer at Tansi Major Seminary, Onitsha, 2001 to 2005
6. Lecturer at the Spiritan School of Philosophy, 2006 to 2008
9. Parish Priest at St Mark Umueri, 2008 to 2013
10. Parish Priest at St Dominic’s, Uke, 2013 to 2019
11. Parish Priest at Holy Family, Umuoji, 2019 to 2023
12. Parish Priest St John the Baptist, Nsugbe October, 2023 to date.
