In 1917, the Catholic church in Umerum was opened by Re. Fr. Mac Namar and was attached to the Aguleri oarish for years.
In 1950, when Akiyi parish was carved out from Aku parish St. Mary’s Umuerum was added to it but was later on transferred to the Nsukka division in 1953.
The parish in Akiyi was captured during the Civil War. After the war, it was transferred from Akiyi parish to Nimbo parish under the administration of Rev. Fr. Cletus Aleke, the parish priest. From Nimbo, it was transferred again to Ifite-Ogwari parish.
In December 2004, Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke elevated St. Mary’s Umuerum to the status of a parish.
