SS. Peter & Paul Parish, Umumbo

The efforts of Fr J. A. Parrel, an Irish Missionary in 1921 and that of Monsignor William Obeleagu in 1937 together with Fr Tansi and Fr Ulogu in evangelizing the Umumbo people

through establishment of school that was also used for liturgical gathering were shortlived. It was in 1940 that Monsignor William Obeleagu later succeeded in merging the two schools in Ikenga and Uga villages with the name SS Peter and Paul School Umumbo. In 1951 when Ayamelum clan was transferred to the governance of Nsukka Division from Onitsha,Umumbo together with the whole Ayamelum communities was transferred from Aguleri parish to Aku Parish under Nsukka in Enugu Diocese. Frs D. O’Keefe, Theo Hermitte, J. Quinn, Enweright and Monsignor Anyichie were of great assistance to Umumbo Outstation from Aku parish in Nsukka. From 1960 when Akiyi Umulokpa became a parish, Fr Flyinn was of great assistance to Umumbo.

The first church building was erected by Monsignor Raphael Eze. It did not last long as it was badly devastated during the Nigerian-Biafran War. It was demolished because of its degree of its dilapidation. SS Peter and Paul Umumbo station depended on St Anthony’s Ifite Ogwari when it became a parish after the Civil War under the administrations of Frs Ogu, B. Ogugua, B. Mbata, Charles Ukagha and Fr Eva Nwamadi. Frs Azegba, Ozjoko, Wilfred Odoh and J. U. Ugwuanyi administered to Umumbo Outstation from CKP Omor when it was made a parish in 1990. Fr Wilfred Odoh resumed the construction of the church building that was started by Fr Ukagha in 1985.

Fr Paul Obiaga was made the parish priest of CKP Omor and the administrator of Umumbo Station on 25th Nov 1998when the Ayamelum Catholic faithful returned from Nsukka Diocese to Onitsha Archdiocese. Fr Paul Obiaga facilitated the creation of SS Peter and Paul Parish and then handed over to Fr John Omuta in whose regime the parish gained the status of a parish on January 15, 2006.

The pioneer parish priest was Fr John Ekwunife who mobilized the parishioners, commenced and erected the old parish house. Fr Izuu Ifem completed the five classroom blocks started by Fr John and added toilet facilities to it. Umumbo first indigenous priest Fr Simeon Amuluche, was ordained on July 25, 2009. Fr Joseph Abba’s tenure was very brief.

Fr Ezeoruonye came, completed the Chapel of Perpetual Adoration, and with the help of the PMS through Sr Benedette Ezekoli constructed a big water reservoir. The second Pastoral Visit by the Archbishop Okeke was on Nov 13, 2011. In his days was held months of spiritual warfare to scatter the demonic strongholds, and it yielded a huge fruit. It was also in his regime that the Pioneer Primary School was given back to the Church. He also worked tirelessly to the upgrading of Mater Christi Group of Schools.

Fr Ignatius Nwose took over in 2015 to 2021. He completed the two storey building of Mater Christi Group of schools. Fr Solomon Ezimuo took over from the year 2021 till 2023. Fr Peter Ometa took over from Fr Solomon on September 1, 2023.
